Airlines to join Star Alliance network

National carrier Air China and Shanghai Airlines announced over the weekend they will officially join the Star Alliance group of airlines in a month’s time.

Their membership in an international airline network follows China Southern Airlines’, which is scheduled to join SkyTeam tomorrow.

The latest move is seen by industry players as laying the foundation for the country to break into the ranks of large civil aviation players.

“Both the hardware and software of China’s civil aviation industry will be upgraded to a new level,” said Lou Yongfeng, the managing director of international affairs and cooperation with Air China, over the weekend.

“Travelers who come to see the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will also benefit from the improvement,” he said.

Lou said Air China will have to meet 57 standards set by the Star Alliance to ensure the same level of stellar service, which in turn compels both the airline and local airports to invest heavily in infrastructure, upgrade and strengthen staff training.

Thirty domestic airports have so far been upgraded as a result.

“They will all install an advanced luggage recognition and search system, which can help locate lost luggage across the world in a short period of time,” Lou added as one example.

Airports will also have standardized luggage tags with bar codes to replace manual scanning.

The 30 airports upgraded were selected based on their annual passenger throughput and cover almost all provincial capitals.

Lou said two more batches of airports are slated for renovation, but gave no further details.

The country’s civil aviation industry has seen rapid development in recent years but service and management challenges continue to plague officials aiming for a world-class industry.

More hybrid vehicles to hit Chinese market next year

Six hybrid electric vehicles models made either by joint venture automakers or local Chinese automakers will be sold in Chinese market next year, Chinese newspaper reported.

1. Honda’s Civic hybrid vehicle will be imported to Chinese market by the end of this year and it will be priced at $22,000-$25,000. The vehicle is powered by 1.3 Liter i-VETC engine and IMA, electromotor, nickel-hydrogen battery, and power control unit. The maximum output and torque of this vehicle is equivalent to that of a 1.8 liter gasoline engine.

Experts say the vehicle can run 31 kilometers on one liter gas and that it consumes half as much gasoline as a conventional 1.8 liter vehicle does.

Honda’s joint venture Dongfeng Honda is also planning to locally produce Honda Civic Hybrid which is similar to the imported hybrid in China next year. So for, Honda has sold more than 100,000 Civic Hybrid vehicles worldwide.

2. General Motors chairman Wagoner announced in Beijing earlier this month his companywill start local production of Chevrolet brand hybrid vehicle in China next year. The vehicle is developed by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, a joint research facility between General Motors and Shanghai Automotive. Shanghai GM did not release estimated prices for this vehicle, but Wagoner said it should not be too expensive.

The vehicle is powered by a 2.4 liter straight-four engine. The vehicle’s maximum output is 125kw/6400rpm, maximum torque is 225Nm/48000rpm and maximum velocity is 210km/h.

3. BYD’s F6DM will be the first iron battery powered vehicle throughout the world. The dual mode vehicle, priced at $20,000, will hit Chinese market next year. The vehicle can run as long as 430 kilometers after recharging (100 kilometers on electricity-powered mode and 330 kilometers on hybrid mode). The output of this vehicle is 200 KW and maximum velocity is 160 km/hour; it consumes 15 KWH to run 100 kilometers.

The first Hybrid vehicle that entered Chinese market is Toyota Prius, which started production in Changchun-based FAW-Toyota at the end of 2005. But the sales of this hybrid vehicle are abysmally small.

In the first nine months this year, Toyota Prius sold only 283 units in China. Experts say disappointing sales of Toyota Prius is a result of its prices. It is too expensive and China has not yet offered substantial policy incentives to hybrid vehicle manufacturers and customers.

Canadian union calls Chrysler’s actions “stupid”

Buzz Hargrove isn’t mincing words about his opinion of Chrysler LLC’s strategy. Calling the decision to send the Magnum and Pacifica models out to pasture and cut shifts and jobs at the Brampton, Ontario plant “stupid,” Hargrove has said the Canadian Auto Workers aren’t interested in the type of concessions the UAW recently agreed to. While the UAW is allowing new hires to be given a lower pay level, as well as taking on a health care trust fund, the CAW will be having none of that, according to Hargrove.

Cuts were expected, but Chrysler’s recent scaling back is more than necessary, according to Hargrove, who counters that what the company’s really trying to do is reduce supply in order to drive up demand and keep prices higher. It sounds like a good way to make the automaker profitable, thinning the lineup and trimming overproduction. The problem, according to The Buzz, is that Chrysler’s plan is anathema to the long union tradition of providing jobs that pay well enough to allow a solid middle class life for autoworkers. With the pay cuts, Hargrove says that autoworkers will no longer be able to afford to buy the cars they build. The recent fall of the dollar isn’t helping matters, and will likely give Chrysler another point to argue when asking for concessions. The Canadian Auto Workers will begin duking it out with Detroit in July, so expect the rhetoric to become even more heated in the months to come.
