joke about HST

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will receive an \’\’ HST Compensation\’\’\’\’

payment.and I\’\’ll explain it by using a Q & A format:

Q. What is an \’\’HST Compensation\’\’ payment?

A. It is money that the provincial government will send to taxpayers.

Q.. Where will the government get this money ?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money ?

A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment

A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn\’\’t that stimulating the economy of China ?

A. Shut up.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the economy by spending your compensation cheque wisely:

If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka …

If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

If you purchase a computer, it will go to India , Taiwan or China .

If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico , Honduras and Guatemala ..

If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea .

If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan .

* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in Canada by:

1) Spending it at yard sales, or

2) Going to hockey games, or

3) Spending it on prostitutes, or

4) Beer or

5) Tattoos.

(These are the only Canadian businesses still operating in Canada. )

Conclusion:

Go to a hockey game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale

and drink beer all day !

No need to thank me, I\’\’m just glad I could be of help.

Walmart to offer banking services June 15 in Canada

wal mart Walmart to offer banking services June 15 in CanadaThe world’s largest retailer, Walmart, has announced it would launch a bank in Canada on June 15 after the U.S.-based retail giant received regulatory approval in Canada.

Walmart firstly applied with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), among other regulatory bodies, to offer financial services including interest-earning deposits in Canada almost two years ago.

Walmart’s business model has always been to offer lower prices compared to its competitors by moving more volume.

The company continues to experience strong earnings, with the North American economic downturn only helping to fuel revenue as more people flocked to Walmart stores to save money.

The Canadian banking sector has an oligopoly market structure as six top banks, including the Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC, TD, and Scotia Bank, among the others, essentially dictate deposit rates as they collude naturally to maximize earnings.

Additionally, banking fees remain high in the country. Only recently, other banks, such as ING and Alley Bank have opened operations in the country offering consumers marginally better rates, but the same can’t be said about their service since they do not operate mortar establishments and offer services only through the Internet.

With Walmart’s reputation for lower retail prices and as a record number of people drove to Walmart stores, it is clear the company will adapt its high volume low cost business model to the banking sector. The fact that the Canadian banking sector is an oligopoly will only help Walmart since there is far less competition compared to the United States were there are thousands of deposit taking financial intermediaries throughout the country.

Walmart’s entrance into the Canadian banking sector will at least put downward pressure on prices, mainly on banking fees, but the company would likely remain confined from pushing rates too high from regulatory policies.

Walmart already offers some financial services, including money transfer services, but will not be able to offer financial products and become a deposit taking institution.

As at June 5, the company employed 82,000 people in Canada with 300 stores across the country.

The company declined to disclose additional information preceding the June 15 launch date.

Walmart recently abandoned its quest to get banking privileges in the United States post strong lobbying and pressure from the banking sector in the country.

The company could later make a stronger attempt in the future.

B.C. residents will not have to pay sales tax in WA

FYI:http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/06/08/bc-washington-state-sales-tax-exemption.html

B.C. and Ontario residents will not have to pay sales tax in Washington state starting July 1, the state government announced Tuesday.

The savings would amount to as much as 9.5 per cent in some areas of the state, which has a basic sales tax of 6.5 per cent. Individual counties can add their own sales taxes of up to three per cent.

Washington state law allows a sales tax exemption to residents of jurisdictions that impose a sales tax of three per cent or less.

Residents of B.C. and Ontario previously did not qualify for the exemption but both provinces are adopting a harmonized sales tax July 1, which technically eliminates provincial sales taxes.

The state’s ‘non-resident sales tax exemption’ will apply to purchases of goods in Washington for use outside the state, the state’s Department of Revenue said in a news release.

“The exemption applies only to tangible personal property and does not apply to lodging, meals, or other retail services that are provided in the state,” the release said.

Visitors from B.C. or Ontario to Washington need to show proof of residency, such as a driver’s licence or passport, to get the exemption.

The move is expected to entice shoppers south, especially in communities close to the U.S. Vancouver is about 30 kilometres from the border.

People who live in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which already have the HST, and Alberta and the three territories, which have no provincial or territorial sales taxes, already don’t have to pay the tax in Washington.

Hyundai Sales Promotions : Genesis Coupe 2.0T $19995 Smart Cash Savings

Noticed that the 2010 Genesis Coupe 2.0T 6 Speed Manual is running for $19995 on hyundaicanada.com. The math boiled down to:

$24,495 Starting Price
-$4,500 Smart Cash Savings
———————–
$19,995 Total

Note that Delivery ($1565) and GST are NOT included in this from what I can see, meaning the finally tally would be around $22,600 somewhere (not sure if they calculate taxes after delivery, I would assume they would) Looks like the promotion runs from June 1st to June 30th.

http://hyundaicanada.com/Pages/speci…romotions.aspx

This was listed in the entry as well, but I’m not sure exactly what it means. Possibly one of the more informed readers here could tell me (effective finance rate versus annual finance rate) assuming you didn’t have the cash for the vehicle upfront.

Finance a 2010
0% for 60 MOS.†
Annual Finance Rate
For information only

7.73% Effective Finance Rate for 60 MOS.†

Whether or not you like the car (some things I love [handling, speed, looks], others not so much [practicality, passenger space, lowness to the ground for entering and exiting etc]), this seems like a really good deal for this particular vehicle.

Change to Optimum Points Program July 1

If you’ve been stockpiling Optimum Points for a while it’s great time to redeem them — Shoppers Drug Mart is changing their redemption levels as of July 1, 2010. The new redemption levels, which can be seen here, require more points per redemption level, making the program somewhat less lucrative. Here’s how the changes look:

Current Redemption Levels:

* 7,000 Points for $10
* 15,000 Points for $25
* 30,000 Points for $55
* 40,000 Points for $75
* 75,000 Points for $150

After July 1, 2010:

* 8,000 Points for $10
* 22,000 Points for $30
* 38,000 Points for $60
* 50,000 Points for $85
* 95,000 Points for $170

So I would like to say use your point early, and you save money. hurry up!

5 Ways To Save Money With Banks

1. Helps You Pay Your Bills Online and On time

Paying bills with your online bank or through your personal finance software saves money in one of two ways. First, when your payments are automated, you don’t need to worry about forgetting to make a bill payment. Since you can easily pay $35.00 for a late payment, having a system in place that helps you automatically pay your bills is a valuable feature. Also, depending on your computer software, you can set up automatic bill payments using your software bill pay feature. I use Moneydance, and I know they have bill pay features.

A second way that using a bill pay feature saves you money is that you can avoid the cost of postage. While not a significant difference, it is a simple way to save money.

2. Send Cash Free

There was a time when the best way to send cash to someone else was by using a service like Western Union. The only problem is that this is also a very expensive way to send money. However, if you are using an online bank (depending on the bank), it is likely that you have some type of an online money transfer feature. If you happen to use ING Direct, you can always electronically send money to anyone who has a US bank account. With so many free ways to transfer cash, you shouldn’t need to use a pay service to send money.

3. Get a Competitive Interest Rate

The best banking interest rates are offered through online banking. In fact, I’ve noticed that it is not unusual to find online checking accounts that have a higher interest rate than brick and mortar bank savings accounts. While you won’t find high rates anywhere right now, you are likely to find a better rate by banking online.

As a sample, here are the current savings account interest rates (as of May 2010) for some online banks:

* Ally.ca – 2%
* ING Direct – 1.2%

4. Easy Account Access Worldwide

As I write this post, I’m at a hotel in Brisbane, Australia. While I was getting on the plane to fly here, someone called me about a bank transfer I was supposed to do, but forgot. Thankfully, I have an online bank, so all I need to do is sign in online and transfer the money. With a traditional bank, it would have been a huge headache to get the money to that person.

So how does that save money? I was able to save on the cost in phone calls and whatever fees my bank would have charged – if they even did the transaction.

5. Avoid Bank Fees

Now this one completely depends on which online bank you choose. I’ve used ING Direct for about six years now, and I’ve never paid a single bank fee. Just like Bob, I love ING. While it is possible to pay a fee, the fees are few and far between. A couple of years ago, I had a bank that charged me for downloading my bank information to Quicken. Those are the kinds of silly fees you can avoid at ING.
