A lot of readers sent us the story of a Florida teen who received the awesome birthday gift of some rocks and crumpled up Chinese newspapers inside a Nintendo DS box. After some fuss and the discovery that another customer had already returned the same box of rocks, Wal-Mart made the situation right. Reader Ryan found himself in a similar situation, but without the happy ending (yet!): a Texas Best Buy sold him a paving stone instead of a Macbook Pro.

He wrote:

When I got home I opened the box and found a paving stone packed with bubble wrap, instead of the Macbook Pro.

I returned to the store and the manager, “Keith”, was not too willing to help me out. He kept falling back on the line “Apple seals the boxes, not us. Take it up with Apple.”

I have sent an email to Best Buy corporate and have contacted my credit card company. Unfortunately, they can’t do anything until the charge posts.

So right now, I paid $2164.89 for a very nice red brick.

I have no idea how it could be happened. it is a joke from best buy? or someone steal it?

Canadians are unlucky when it comes to gadgets. First they usually arrive later than they would to many Third World countries. Second, the prices can get out of control. Take the iPhone for example. If when it lands in Canada, it’s likely going to cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $799 without a contract and without unlimited data service. And that is where it might get really scary!

A Rogers Wireless data plan for your iPhone will probably start at $0.05 per KB. Monthly plans will probably come in at $5/month for a 5MB cap and a $10/month plan for a 10MB cap. Additional kilobytes (yes, kilobytes) cost 3 cents. Pricey!

A Rogers iPhone seems inevitable is on its way, the question is whether or not anyone will be able to afford it and the data plan it will require.

Update: It’s official! The Rogers iPhone is on its way. No details on pricing yet, but a press release issued this morning (April 29, 2008) put Mr. Rogers himself on the record: “We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.”

Update: Ok…we got a date! July 11th kids. The new iPhone 3G, $199.99 for the 8GB version and $299.99 for the 16GB Rogers iPhone on 3-year terms. That’s the same price you’d pay in the US on AT&T but you have to sign an extra year into your contract. No word yet on non-contract pricing or what we’ll get for data plans. Cross your fingers.

1. This folder must be placed on your iPhone in this location: /Applications/anySIM.app
   • No other location or name should be used! Capitalization matters. This is very important.
   • In the directory named above should be all the .png and .bin files for the app, along with the anySIM executable itself.
2. This version works only with 4.02.13_G baseband version and can be run on 1.0.2, or 1.1.1 jailbroken systems
   • The only way your baseband will be 4.02.13_G while you’re running 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 is if you updated then downgraded firmware
   • Although there are scattered reports of successfully running this from 1.1.2, odds are your baseband will reset and you may get stuck with a restore screen, so you should really do this from 1.0.2. But if you try from 1.1.2 and get stuck with a restore screen, don’t panic — so far every single predicament you can get yourself into with software unlock steps can be fixed via normal FW restore or the DFU restore.
3. If your iPhone came with 4.02.13_G (aka 1.1.2) OUT OF THE BOX then do NOT use this unlock yet.
   • It hasn’t been tested with bootloaders other than BOOT03.09_M3S2
   • Very new iPhones (and all U.K. iPhones) come out of the box with BOOT04.06_M3S2.
   • If you’re in doubt, check the output of bbupdater -v or go into minicom and issue at+xgendata
4. The “u” version of anySIM1.2 was released to give more prominent credit to the original anySIM coders (it is a great app!). But the underlying executable and patch location are the same as in the release available here on Friday November 9th.
