· Best engine in 2-liter to 2.5-liter category
· Sixth category award win in a row for Audi TFSI technology

Ingolstadt/Stuttgart – A jury of 71 leading motoring journalists from35 countries has voted the turbocharged 2.5-liter FSI in the Audi TT RS as the “International Engine of the Year 2010” in the 2-liter to 2.5-liter category.

The 2.5-liter unit in the Audi TT RS features both turbocharging and FSI direct gasoline injection technology, two of Audi’s core technologies, and marked a return to five cylinder engines for the brand with the four rings. With a displacement of 2,480 cubic centimeters, this engine produces 250 kW (340 hp) between 5,400 and 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) from 1,600 to 5,300 rpm.

International Engine of the Year jury members felt that the 2.5-liter engine in the TT RS is: “Torque, power, a beautiful sound – this engine has it all. This is five-cylinder architecture at its best”.

This powerful five-cylinder engine is also surprisingly frugal, requiring an average of just 9.2 liters/100 km (25.57 US mpg) in the Coupй, while the Roadster needs only 9.5 l/100 km (24.76 US mpg).

The engine’s low weight of only 183 kilograms (403.45 lb) is also a top figure. It helps keep the total weight of the TT RS low and also offers significant advantages for the distribution of axle loads and thus for the car’s handling.

Developed by quattro GmbH, the Audi TT RS was launched in the summer of 2009. The Coupй can sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and from zero to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 15.9 seconds. It has an optional top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).

This is the sixth category win in a row at the International Engine of the Year Awards for Audi TFSI technology. For the last five years, the Audi 2.0-liter TFSI engine has won the award in the 1.8 to 2.0-liter category. FSI direct gasoline injection and turbocharging are two of Audi’s core technologies.

Audi A7 confirmed for U.S. and S8 model in the works, but once again, no A5 Sportback

From Autoblog
audi-a8-live-miami_-(3)_opt
At last week’s tony Design Miami reveal of the 2011 A8 luxury cruiser, we were able to corner Johan de Nysschen, Audi’s executive vice president in North America, and ask him for some tasty tibits on the brand’s upcoming products, including the A8′s sexier derivative, the A7.

In addition to giving us the first official confirmation of the A7′s existence, de Nysschen revealed that the four-door coupe model will slot in “a little bit below” the new A8 in terms of pricing, just as we expected. Of course, it’s worth noting that the 2011 A8 faces a price bump due to substantial increases in content and technology, so when the A7 finally comes to the States, the average model is likely to sticker at around $82,000-$83,000, which de Nysschen says is about the price for a typically equipped 2010 A8 (pricing starts at $74,550 plus delivery).

Based on Audi’s new longitudinal modular platform technology, the A7 will be clearly related to the A8 (and the A6 replacement that will follow it), and de Nysschen says that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Sportback concept car serves as a “very reliable indicator” of what the production model will look like. Judging by recent spy shots from our friends at KGP, that very much appears to be the case. While parts commonality will be “substantial,” de Nysschen says that the A7 will not use the full aluminum spaceframe design of the A8, although it will have aluminum elements.

As expected, the A8 will launch Stateside in both standard and long-wheelbase formats, with the latter predicted to make up the lion’s share of the volume (the A8L presently accounts for about 80 percent of the model’s sales).

We asked De Nysschen about how the two models will interact in the full-size luxury sedan segment, and he noted that:

“This top end segment is characterized by more conservative people, and we need to clearly take lower levels of risk with a flagship model [the A8]. But we recognize too that there is a sizable enough cluster of customers in that same segment who are ready for a more avant-garde design [the A7]. So we will essentially be positioning two cars into the same segment, which means that independently, the volume each attains is not that significant, but when you put them together, it will mean that our share of that segment will grow quite dramatically.”

All-in De Nysschen thinks that the A8 will account for about 4,000 to 5,000 sales per year in the U.S., and the less costly A7 could clear 7,000-8,000 additional units.

De Nysschen tells us “We haven’t announced that yet, but I think it’s pretty safe to assume that an S model is in the wings. We always have a high-performance version. And that, of course, will be in the normal wheelbase version.” Will it come to America? we asked. “Yes, I think so.”

When we asked about the fortunes of the A7′s smaller sibling, the A5 Sportback, the Audi VP replied, “We don’t yet have the customer footprint – the sheer volume in the U.S. market – to yet be able to afford the luxury of the brand as they do in Europe, where they can begin to break it down into ever smaller niches.” For that reason, fans of the Four-Ring brand should not expect to see the comely A5 Sportback in American showrooms any time soon.

U.S. deliveries of the 2011 A8 are slated to begin late in the fourth quarter of 2010, and we don’t expect to see the A7 in showrooms until sometime the following year.

Audi Q5 getting 7-speed DSG, Porsche variant on the horizon, again

just saw the news from AUTOBLOG. there are some friend will would like to read.

The Audi Q5 will reportedly make its official debut at the Bejing Motor Show next month and with Porsche’s increased stake in the Volkswagen group – going from 31-percent to more than 50-percent – that means that VAG and Porsche might begin to finally play nice again with platform sharing.

Initially, the new Q5 was supposed to underpin Porsche’s own mini ‘ute, but rumors suggested that Audi’s board nixed the idea for fear that a Porsche model sharing the same platform could steal sales from the new CUV. That’s about to change as Porsche gets a few seats on VAG’s board, and according to Autoweek, development of the vehicle-formerly-known as the Roxster is back in full swing.

While there’s no new information about the Porsche, Audi’s Q5 will be revealed packing the new seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox mated to a longitudinal engine. The real benefit of the new DL500 transmission is that it can handle torque output up to 405 lb.-ft. and engine revs of 8,500 rpm. The new tranny will disseminate throughout the rest of the Audi lineup in coming years, first in Quattro models, including the new A4, and then on down to the automaker’s front-wheel-drive models.

2008 AUDI A4 SPECIAL EDITION DEBUTS AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW

08a4se_hi002lo.jpg
AUBURN HILLS, MI., February 6, 2008 – Audi of America Inc. today announced the debut of the 2008 A4 Special Edition at the Chicago Auto Show. The new configuration was created for customers wanting a thoroughly modern German luxury sport sedan with more exterior appeal and attractive packaging. This adds to the popular S line exterior bumpers and grille introduced as standard features on the A4 for the 2008 model year, which include a sportier front bumper and grille design, lower side door flares, and integrated rear trunk lid spoiler.

Designed for A4 sedan and Avant models equipped with the 2.0 TFSI engine, exterior differentiation for the Special Edition includes a new standard 17-inch wheel that features a 9 Y-spoke design pattern. Standard interior features for quattro-equipped models include leather-trimmed heated front seats and metallic paint. As a result, models equipped with FrontTrak attain a $405 improved value in new standard equipment, while those with quattro permanent all-wheel drive attain a $1,155 value improvement.

All A4 Special Edition models include a one-year subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio, complete with commercial-free music plus sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather and data. Similarly, customers can still choose the full S line and Titanium packages as optional sport upgrades, as well as a full range of individual options. Some of these sophistications include DVD-based Audi Navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free preparation, iPod adaptor, and wood beltline trim.

The A4 is also one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its luxury segment. The cutting-edge 2.0 TFSI direct injection engine made the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for the third consecutive year in 2008, which recognized Audi’s expertise with efficient performance and advanced technology.

Safety has also been a top priority for the current model, and the A4 was the first passenger vehicle in its luxury segment to offer brake disc wiping as standard equipment in early 2005. This feature, combined with one of the most advanced and proactive stability control systems ESP 8.0., reduces the chances of inhibited braking performance during wet or inclement weather.

The A4 was one of three Audi models to receive the “Top Safety Pick” designation for 2008 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), for which it also won in 2007. Audi has the highest number of IIHS “Top Safety Pick” designations within its entire model line in comparison to luxury competitors BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. This category recognizes excellence in top frontal, side, and rear crash performance and the availability of ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

“The Audi A4 has been a star performer for many years as an exciting sport luxury product offering in addition to its outstanding residual value,” said Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice President, Audi of America. “Much attention has been paid to constant enhancements to proactively meet and exceed the most particular customer wishes and tastes.”

The A4 Special Edition is expected to be available at authorized U.S. Audi dealer partners by mid March 2008 in both sedan and Avant body styles. For more information about previewing the A4 special edition at the Chicago Auto Show, please visit chicagoautoshow.com.

Crazy eights! MTM builds an 888-hp Audi R8

audir888.jpg
The Audi R8 is apparently a tempting platform for tuners. We’ve seen sketches of the Abt Audi R8, we spotted the APR Audi R8 at the 2007 SEMA Show, and we recently took a look at the carbon fiberized PPI Audi R8.

MTM, those crazy Germans who built the twin-engine, 740-hp Audi TT Bimoto, brought their own version of the R8 to the Dubai Motor Show. Although visually subtle, a turbocharger system has been added to the 4.2-liter V8 for a total of 888 bhp and 610 lb-ft torque. 0-60 mph can be achieved in 3.0 seconds flat, and top speed is limited to 223 mph. MTM built the car, fittingly named the R888, as a one-off for a European customer, but they will gladly build more of them for a mere €280,000 each.
