2011 Subaru Legacy: More room, more refinement, more power

Canada NewsWire, TORONTO, July 26

TORONTO, July 26 /CNW/ – After launching an all-new roomier and more powerful Legacy to great acclaim in 2010, Subaru adds more choices for the 2011 model year with new features and options that let drivers create the Legacy that best suits their needs.

Named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Editor’s Choice in the Family Car category by World of Wheels Magazine and Best Midsize Car in the Automotive Leasing Guide Canadian Residual Value Awards, Subaru has further enhanced the Legacy for the new model year with:

  • Folding side-view mirrors, now standard on every Legacy sold in Canada
  • A new Convenience Package for the Legacy 2.5i, including a voice-activated Bluetooth(R) system for hands-free cell phone connectivity,10-way power driver’s seat, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and a sporty stainless steel exhaust tip
  • PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) technology, available on the 2.5i Convenience Package with the Lineartronic(R) Continuously Variable Transmission
  • The addition of front fog lights to the 2.5i Sport Package
  • Simulated carbon-fibre interior trim, aluminum alloy sport pedals, front fog lights, and silver upholstery stitching added to the Legacy 2.5GT

Legacy continues to be offered in three exceptional trim levels: the 170-horsepower 2.5i, which can be fitted with either a 6-speed manual transmission (6MT) or optional Lineartronic(R) CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with paddle shift controls; the 265-horsepower turbo-charged 2.5GT with 6-speed manual transmission; and the 256-horsepower 6-cylinder 3.6R with 5-speed Electronic Direct Control Automatic Transmission with Manual Mode (5EAT), blipping control, and paddle shift controls.

Like all Subaru models, every Legacy is equipped with Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive, an invaluable performance- and safety-enhancing system that sets Legacy apart among midsize sedans. All-wheel drive is rare in the midsize segment, and only Subaru makes it standard on every model it offers.

Besting Midsize Benchmarks

The long wheelbase and wide track put Legacy squarely in the midsize segment while retaining a taut, highly maneuverable package. Legacy offers more total passenger room (2.91 cubic metres or 103 cu. ft.) than many competitors with more hip, shoulder, and head room as well as a large trunk (.416 cubic metres or 14.7 cu. ft.). By itself, achieving a large trunk is significant, since the Legacy’s AWD layout requires packaging a rear differential and drive axles. In fact, Parents magazine cited Legacy’s “roomy back seat and a trunk that is perfect for stroller-toting moms and dads” as factors in its selection as a top family vehicle.

Confident, Agile Handling and Safety for any Road … or any Weather

All Legacy models are equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), which combines stability and traction control capability. Every Legacy is also equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system.

Comfort and Convenience in All Models

Standard comfort and available amenities for the Legacy 2.5i include steering wheel audio control buttons, electronic parking brake, automatic headlights, and an overhead console with a holder for sunglasses. The driver-selectable Hill Holder System holds the vehicle in place on grades greater than 5 percent until the driver applies the throttle to pull away from a stop.

The turbo-charged 2.5GT offers performance enhancements such as twin steel-tipped exhaust pipes, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Summer Performance tires on 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels, as well as amenities such as a power moonroof, leather seating surfaces, 4-way power front passenger seat, premium harman/kardon audio system, voice-activated navigation with rear-view camera, voice-activated Bluetooth, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector.

The extremely well-equipped Legacy 3.6R is uniquely fitted with P225/50 R17 Bridgestone Turanza all-season tires fitted to 10-spoke alloy wheels. For even more well-equipped performance, both the 2.5i and the 3.6R may be fitted with Sport and Limited option packages, and Limited models may be further enhanced with a Multimedia package.

Three Levels of Engine Performance

Legacy offers three levels of performance. The Legacy 2.5i is powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine with a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) with Manual Mode is standard on the Convenience and Limited Packages and optional on the 2.5i and 2.5i Sport Package. Both transmissions help to improve acceleration, response and fuel economy. Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the CVT transmission offer an outstanding 9.1 L/100 km city/6.4 L/100 km highway rating.

The Legacy 2.5GT is powered by a 265-horsepower turbocharged/intercooled Subaru Boxer engine. This high-performance turbocharged engine is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. Designed for the discerning enthusiast, the Legacy 2.5GT is equipped to challenge some of the best names in the sport sedan field.

The Legacy 3.6R offers a sophisticated blend of performance and comfort, powered by a 256-horsepower 3.6-litre 6-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine matched to a 5-speed electronic automatic transmission with Manual Mode and blipping control for smooth downshifts, and uses regular-grade fuel.

Subaru’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Subaru has adopted a chain-type CVT, the world’s first longitudinally mounted CVT system for AWD production vehicles. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the lowest and highest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range for improved fuel economy and performance.

Because a CVT does not shift gears, the driver enjoys smoother performance in all driving situations. The selectable Manual Mode of the Lineartronic CVT uses six pre-selected ratios to allow the driver to “shift” manually using steering wheel paddle controls.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive – The Subaru Advantage

Subaru offers three different Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive systems in the 2011 Legacy line – Continuous, Active Torque Split, and Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) – each tailored to the engine and type of transmission. In all Legacy models equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the Continuous AWD system uses a viscous-coupling locking centre differential to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. Slippage at either set of wheels will send more power to the opposite set.

Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT use the Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD. An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively controls power distribution in response to driving conditions.

Legacy 3.6R models exclusively feature advanced Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive with a 5-speed automatic transmission. A planetary centre differential works with an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch to manage power distribution. The VTD system normally sends more power to the rear wheels to enhance handling agility, and it continuously adjusts power distribution in response to driving and road conditions.

The Subaru Safety Story

The Legacy, like all Subaru models, has consistently earned top scores in government and insurance industry crash tests. Subaru’s Advanced Ring-Shaped Frame Reinforcement safety structure, proven over a decade in all Subaru models, forms the foundation for crash protection and occupant safety. The 2011 Legacy features greater use of high-tensile steel to keep weight gain low despite the much larger interior package.

Legacy’s standard equipment includes front seat-mounted side impact air bags and side curtain air bags that offer head protection for front and rear occupants. Legacy models are also equipped with the Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag System. This intelligent air bag system employs dual-stage-deployment driver and front passenger air bags. The passenger side front seat incorporates an occupant detection module that classifies the seat as empty or the occupant as an adult or infant/child to control the force of air bag deployment.

Subaru (Robin) introduces new “all-season” engine

Subaru’s All-Season Engine combines the powerful benefits of overhead cam (OHC) technology from its EX Series engines with special cold-weather features of the SX Snow Series line to create a multi-seasonal solution for a variety of outdoor equipment.

Initially developed as a year-round power solution for rotary brooms, Subaru’s All-Season Engine doesn’t require any adjustments to accommodate varying weather conditions. The 9-horsepower unit is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from 20 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit) up to 140 degrees, making it ideal for additional types of multi-season equipment including log splitters, chippers and shredders, and lawn and turf seeders.

The All-Season engine features chain-driven OHC technology, a standard for high-performance automotive engines. The technology allows the intake and exhaust valves to be positioned for optimum engine performance, and offers lower resistance for the air/fuel mixture flow. Designed with a highly efficient pent-roof-type combustion chamber, the All-Season Engine is able to utilize a high compression ratio, producing higher power and torque while limiting exhaust emissions and fuel consumption.

To have the ability to function in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, an engine must provide the proper balance of cooling and heating. The All-Season Engine achieves this thanks to the inclusion of several extreme weather features. To combat excessive heat in warmer temperatures, the engine is designed with patent-pending technology and other special features to provide outstanding cooling. To utilize every possible cooling area, special heat dissipation fins have been built into the mounting base, cylinder and both the inner and outer crankcase surfaces. The OHC technology allows for 360-degree airflow around both the exhaust and intake valve stem areas to provide additional cooling action.

An anti-icing baffle is included to ensure superior operation in cooler temperatures and humid conditions. This feature redirects heat from the cylinder head back to the carburetor to keep it warm and prevent problems commonly associated with cold-weather operation. Humid environments can result in moisture build up and potential freezing in the engine. The anti-icing baffle also directs heat into the air cleaner system, eliminating potential ice build-up and airflow restriction in the nearby venturi area. Additionally, the transfer of warm air to the carburetor helps to maintain engine temperature, keeping the engine warm for easy starting on the first pull – every time.

Easy, one-pull starting is further encouraged with the inclusion of an automatic decompression system and specially designed recoil housing. The automatic decompression system reduces the required recoil pulling force by 30- to 40-percent when compared with competitive models. With fewer moving parts and an optimized-capacity rigid muffler, the All-Season Engine operates a full 2dBA (decibel level) quieter than other same-class engines.

For further protection in cold-weather environments, the All-Season Engine includes anti-icing guards. These strategically placed guards prevent snow and ice from entering the engine and freezing up, causing damage to the governor system, vital controls and linkages.

To avoid common problems associated with battery-starters in cold weather, the All-Season Engine is available with an optional 120-volt starter system. It meets EPA and CARB emission regulations, and is backed by an industry-leading 3-year limited warranty.

Subaru introduces advanced stereoscopic vision system — “New EyeSight”

Volvo may have been one of the first car companies to bring an automatic braking system to the street, but it certainly won’t be the last. Subaru just announced it’s the New EyeSight – a system that uses two cameras to detect potential collision hazards and stop the vehicle if necessary. The cameras work in conjunction with something Subaru is calling pre-collision braking control. If the cameras detect an object like a pedestrian or car in the vehicle’s path, an alarm will sound to alert the driver. If the driver still takes no action, the car will stop itself, potentially avoiding a collision or reducing damage from the impact.

Subaru says that the system will only stop the car if the difference in speed between the two objects is less than 18.5 mph. If the difference is any faster than that, and the New EyeSight system will simply slow the vehicle.

The company also announced a new brake assist system. When the driver applies the brakes in a panic situation, brake-assist equipped cars will add an extra boost to the brake system, hopefully stopping the vehicle before an impact.

Finally, New EyeSight equipped vehicles will also feature adaptive cruise control. Like similar systems from other manufacturers, the Subaru cars will be able to detect the speed of vehicles ahead of it in traffic, and adjust its speed accordingly when the cruise control is active. So far there’s no word on how much the New EyeSight system will cost when it hits the market. Japanese customers should be able to order it on Legacy models starting next month. Full details in the press release after the jump.

Prodrive launches new rally-spec Subaru Impreza N2010

From autoblog
Prodrive has had a number of clients over the years. They’ve raced Ferraris at Le Mans, racked up innumerable victories for Aston Martin, and even ran Honda’s Formula One team until they took the reins themselves. But few associations have put the British racing consultancy on the map as much as its collaboration with Subaru in the World Rally Championship.

Unfortunately for David Richards and company, Subaru withdrew last year from the WRC. But that hasn’t kept Prodrive from tweaking out another rally-prepped Impreza, as if to show it still can. Homologated to production-based Group N specifications, the Impreza N2010 packs a twin-scroll-turbocharged two-liter boxer four with competition-spec fuel injectors, catalyst and ECU for an extra 20 horsepower over stock and a wider torque band. It’s also riding on an adjustable Ohlins suspension, with differentials front, center and rear, kept in check by AP Racing brakes and reinforced with an FIA-certified roll cage.

The result is what Prodrive claims is a more competitive package compared to a Super 2000-spec rally machine at about half the price – challengers can pick one up from £120,000 (about $195k), or lease one for two years. Details in the press release after the jump, photos in the gallery below.

SEMA 2009: Subaru Legacy GTk is your friendly family hauler, autocrosser

01-sema-subarus-live
While Block’s STI TRAX is an entertaining diversion for a clothing mogul/extreme sports personality/rampant gearhead, the Subaru Legacy GTk is far-and-away our favorite concept at the Subie booth.

Based on the 2010 Legacy 2.5GT Wagon, the GTk has been designed to strike a balance between family shlepper and SCCA Solo autocross competitor, beginning with a tuned and tweaked turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer putting out 300 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission with a short shifter sends power to Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, while track-tuned Bilstein struts and STI “pink” springs suspend six-piston (front) and four piston (rear) Brembo calipers squeezing cross-drilled discs at all four corners. If all that and a set of custom HRE 19-inch wheels isn’t enough, Subaru’s partner in the project — Specialized Vehicles, Inc. — sourced a Formula Junior A class-spec kart that can fit into the cargo area — no trailer required. We think we’ve found our next project, but the 1969 360 SPT Delivery Van needs to find a home in our garage. Full details about Subaru’s three other concepts here and make the jump for the release on the GTk.

Subaru opens STI Gallery in Tokyo

974962027
You remember turning 20? the end of teenage years, the beginning of adulthood…that’s what Subaru Tecnica International – the performance division better known by its initials STI – celebrates this year, and to mark the occasion, Fuji Heavy is inaugurating the STI Gallery, a new museum in Tokyo that highlights the products and activities of its Subaru racing unit.

Located at 3-9-6 Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, the STI Gallery will be open every day (barring certain holidays) from 9:30 am to 7 pm, when visitors can stop by and scope out STI in all its glory. The car exhibition zone displays STI vehicles both past and present, race and road. (Colin McRae’s WRC New Zealand-winning 1993 Legacy RS is currently on display to celebrate the launch of the new Legacy). There’s also an exhibit of various components and memorabilia and a history section outlining the division’s past activities. Seems like a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon if you find yourself in Tokyo with some time to burn.

Subaru considers entry into World Touring Car Championship

We’re going to play this little game again. Close your eyes and think “rally”. (Not picket lines and protest signs, but tail-sliding, dirt road heroics behind the wheel of turbocharged four-wheel-drive monsters.) Now what company comes to mind? If you’re a sentimentalist you might be thinking Audi or Lancia, but anybody who hasn’t been living in a cave for the last decade or so (with apologies to all our cave-dwelling readers) will almost invariably think of Subaru. Never mind that its WRC team hasn’t been doing that well recently: pumped up Imprezas like the WRX and STI are nearly synonymous with rallying. But now reports indicate that Subaru is considering confusing us by entering to World Touring Car Championship.

The news is sparked by a forthcoming arrangement between the WRC and the WTCC that could see them adopting a common set of rules, not unlike the more practical Super 2000 formula that has both rally and touring car series. Now we’re always encouraged by news of carmakers – especially ones with such well-established motorsport pedigrees – going racing, but we can’t help but wonder if Subaru’s venture onto paved tracks wouldn’t confuse the message and dilute its hard-earned brand identity. Conversely, the oil-ification of the WTCC could give Subaru a chance to prove its mettle with its new diesel engines. Either way, execs from Fuji Heavy and Subaru Tecnica International are expected to visit the touring car championship when it visits Japan on October 24 to scope it out.

Just because we love you, our loyal readers, ever so much, here’s a gallery of studio-quality, high-resolution images of Subaru’s current rally contender.
